10 "Do"s in Graphic Design
1. Choose Time Tested Fonts
There are new fonts being released every day and
some of them are pretty cool, but we suggest using time tested favorites. For Print: Univers, Frutiger, Helvetica, Bodoni, Caslon, Rockwell.
For Web: Georgia, Verdana.
2. Use the Gestalt Principals of Design
Figure & Ground, Proximity, closure, symmetry and continuation & similarity should be considered when designing
3. Use a Grid
It takes a bit of time to set up a grid before you begin to design, but the end result will be a sharp, professional piece.
4. Break the Rules
When it comes to art, breaking "rules" is a good thing since the expected can become boring. The best way to design is to mainly follow the rules and occasionally do the unexpected.
5. Embrace Happy Mistakes
We all make mistakes. It takes a great artist to realize when the mistake works better than the original idea.
6. Research
The first step in design is to become familiar with
the subject matter. The more you learn about the audience and personality of the product, the better the design.
7. Keep It Simple
The most simple designs tend to be the best. This is especially true in our hectic, highly stimulating world today.
8. Retain Your Soul
When working for others, artists can be asked to do things they don't want to do. It's best for everyone, to turn down projects that make you unhappy.
9. Use Your Own Handwriting
When you feel tempted to use a "kid" font, try writing the words yourself — or ask a child to write the words so you can scan the text for use in your document.
10. Visit Art Galleries
Go to art galleries and exhibitions in support of local artists and get inspiration for your own work.
