10 Common Graphic Design Mistakes
|
|
|---|---|
1. Too Much Text
Studies show that people are more likely to scan text rather than read when looking at websites, so limit your copy to just the salient information.
2. Ugly Fonts
The most awful type adorns flyers that somehow end up in your mail box. Avoid these and over used fonts to obtain a level of professionalism.
3. Too Many Fonts
The industry standard is 3 fonts or less depending on the size of the document. When choosing your typefaces, choose one roman style font along with a complimentary san serif typeface.
4. Long Lines of Text
Long lines of text are more challenging to read, so limit your words to eleven per line.
5. Poor Quality Photos
Most photos need some tweaking before they make a public appearance. Adjust contrast, colors and cropping to enhance their effectiveness.

6. Overly Complex Logos & Cluttered Design
When designing a logo, the goal is to produce an image that identifies your personality in a simple, appealing way. When you design an entire page, be sure to eliminate any images and text that may clutter up the design.
7. Haphazard Layout
Designing a website or brochure shouldn't be like decorating a Christmas tree. Information should be organized so the most important features are found quickly and read first.
8. Sound Like Your Selling Something
If you want people to listen to your message, share with them something they may want to know. It's important not to sound like all you want to do is sell something.
9. Trendy Copy-cat
It feels safe to create advertisements that look familiar, but how can you stand out with a look that is just like your competitor's designs?
10. Crayon Colors
Colors that look like they came from a box of 24 crayons give the feeling that a child chose them. Take time choosing the colors used in your design. Avoid combinations that make you think of a holiday.
