Illustration Tips: 10 Ways to Get Published

1. Vibrant Color Palette
The most novice mistake in illustration is choosing pastel colors. It has been proven that children (and art directors) choose bright colors over drab, hands down.
2. Crisp Lines
Fuzzy edges don't play well in illustration so tighten them up and vary the width in the line for the best results.
3. Character Consistency
Characters are drawn in many different scenarios, so if you can show an art director that you're able to capture the character no matter what, you'll be ahead of the rest.
4. No Portraits
In most situations, illustrations depict actions with multiple characters so giving an art director a portrait doesn't show her you can illustrate.
5. Check Your Perspective
The problem with attempting to illustrate using a real or representational art style is that our brains don't see perspective as it actually is. We see three dimensions and need to convert them into two.
6. A Style
It's important to have a distinct style to your artwork so that agents and art directors feel confident about what they'll get when they hire you.
7. Send Postcards
Art Directors and agents will not be offended when they receive a postcard with one of your best images and your contact information. This is a great way to get your illustrations out there.
8. Don't Finish a Project
An art director wants to choose a writer for your art and give feedback about what direction the art should take. Give him an unfinished work that he can mold into a masterpiece.
9. Add Something Original
There's a lot of great illustration art out there and it's a good idea to get inspiration from those who have gone before you. Take that inspiration and make your work original; add another element of design to a classic style.
10. Market Yourself
Agents want to know that you really want to sell your books. The best way to succeed in illustration is to market your work and do presentations as well.
